Who (or What) is God?

Every spiritual thought leader of almost every religious or spiritual group has an understanding of “God” (or, at least, a god or spiritual entity). This understanding governs how they teach the members of the religion to pray, meditate, live, and love.

In other words, the entity you hold as supreme determines how you live your life.

We will look at three popular false beliefs about God before we look at the true God.

1. False: “God doesn’t exist.”

A person who believes there is no God will live his life in a type of spiritual anarchism or, at the very least, pseudo-non-conformism. Divine Law has no significance or bearing in his life for this person.

Scripture goes into detail in many verses about this kind of person. But I can summarize all those verses using just one verse from sacred scripture:

“The fool says in his heart,
‘There is no God.’
They are corrupt; their acts are vile.
There is no one who does good.”
– Psalm 14:1

2. False: “People Created God.”

There’s this theory that humans only started talking about God because there were certain events they couldn’t explain. So once science started explaining these things, there was less and less need for God.

It is true that the more advanced a civilization, the more likely it is to become base, carnal, proud, and Godless. It is also true that many people are superstitious and would attribute every strange phenomenon to the working of spirits.

But none of this proves that we created God.

Before mankind started looking up into space or down into the structure and workings of unicellular organisms, the laws governing the universe were already established. Long before we knew the composition of our planet earth, it was designed perfectly to sustain life.

Learn from the scriptures:

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him.”
– Colossians 1:16

3. False: “The Universe is God. I Am God.”

There is yet another wave of madness that is sweeping the internet. This New Age teaching has been popularized by teachings such as “The Secret” and “The Law of Attraction.”

By these teachings, hundreds of thousands of people are deceived into believing that they are creating this universe and all its material and energetic manifestations and realities. But the same universe also provides their needs from its superabundant goodness and riches.

Of them, it is written:

“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen.”
– Romans 1:25

The truth is that the universe was created by God. He spoke, and it came into being. Mankind was also created by God. Therefore, neither man nor matter is the Creator.

Truth: The REAL God!

God is a supreme Spirit, Who alone exists of Himself, and is infinite in all perfections! His existence is not dependent on anything or anyone else, and He lacks nothing.

He had no maker. He is the first cause, the first mover– the first. Nothing shall come after Him. He is also the last. In other words, He is the beginning of all things, and nothing outlasts Him.

There is none greater than Him. No one even compares to Him. He always was, He is, and He always will be.

He never changes. He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever.

He is all-powerful, perfectly just, and abundantly merciful.

He created the heavens, earth, and all things in them, visible and invisible. Through Him, all things were made.

For us men, and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.

For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. And on the third day, He rose again from the dead and ascended into heaven.

It is God who spoke through the prophets of old and caused them to prophecy and foretell coming events. He gave us the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, the communion of saints, and the forgiveness of sins.

It is God who will judge the living and the dead when He comes again in glory with the saints and the angels.

All shall see Him, even those who have pierced him with their sins and unrepentance.

This is the real God, and there is no other way that we can be saved from the coming destruction except through Jesus Christ.

Repent, and believe the Gospel.
